'Hi, my name is Nancy Yan and I want to share with you a bit about how UHN’s Lyndhurst Spinal Rehabilitation Centre changed my life.'
Rally For Rehab, presented by BMO, is a family-friendly event in support of the University Health Network (UHN) Toronto Rehab, which helps patients reclaim their independence after a life-altering event. I am walking 3.5k on September 8th. 2024. I love your support for this important walk and also JOIN my team to walk as well !! Thank you for your support :)
28 May 2022:
The week started on a routine work schedule. But, by the end of the week, both arms and legs had become cold and rigid…definitely NOT routine! I was admitted to Toronto Western Hospital, as an emergency, where I underwent an MRI followed by a 7-hour surgery. (Diagnosis: Cervical Spondylosis and Myelopathy (pinched nerve in neck causing decreased blood flow into arms and legs)). The Surgery opened up cavities in the neck allowing the blood to flow, but I was still unable to feel my legs nor to move my hands. Needless to say. I was both shocked and saddened. I was suddenly a Quadriplegic (limbs and body from the neck down affected).
01 June 2022:
Prognosis: uncertain; prolonged therapy required. After three days in the ICU, I was transferred to Lyndhurst Spinal Rehabilitation Centre where I would remain until September 3rd. (Lyndhurst administers the largest programme in Canada for people with traumatic and non-traumatic spinal cord injuries and related neurological conditions. Interdisciplinary teams are dedicated to helping patients become as independent as possible as they transition back into their daily lives and communities.) The goal of the various therapies was to teach me how to adapt to my seriously decreased mobility, and to the very limited use of my arms, hands, and legs, as well as to other issues with my body…all-the-while wearing a very awkward neck brace for the duration as well as upon my return home.
During my stay at Lyndhurst I received exceptional care from teams of Doctors, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational & Recreational Therapists and Assistive Technology, and Social Work departments. I was also put in touch with several community ‘support groups’. I used an electric wheelchair knowing that there was the possibility of needing it for the rest of my life. Despite weaknesses in my arms, right hand, and both legs, I was determined to walk once again. With the continuous encouragement from Doctors, Nurses, Therapists, and friends I made significant progress at Lyndhurst.
03rd September 2022:
There I was, Discharged! Standing in front of my own condo using only a walker! I was feeling anxious, but knowing that the staff at Lyndhurst had prepared me for discharge and had arranged at-home visits for Therapists and Nursing care, I entered confidently. I still have ongoing issues with my Right side Leg and hands, but with ongoing outpatient assistance from Lyndhurst, I am gradually resuming an independent lifestyle. I am doing more things. I still have a long way to go with my right hand… I cannot hold a glass of water nor hold a pen to write nor pick up small items.
The day after I was discharged, I was determined to uphold a tradition…going to the last day of The CNE.My Rollator and I did it!
Mid Oct 2022 - April 2024
I remained on an outpatient schedule for intensive continuation of my rehabilitation programme at Lyndhurst Rehabilitation Centre. Physio and Occupational therapies continued until April 2024. In the meantime, Pool Therapy was was worked in as the times for other therapies were reduced. By then, I was down to the use of one cane…yes ONE CANE!!! I still have some distance to travel with my rehabilitation, but things get better and better every day.
The UHN (University Health Network) is a medical research and health partnership among various Hospitals and Health Care providers in the City of Toronto, Ontario.
MORE RESEARCH IS NEEDED. MORE FUNDS ARE REQUIRED.
These are my reasons for participating in the Rally for Rehab 2024.
