I am delighted to be raising money in support of the incredible work of Toronto Rehab, UHN. I hope you will consider a donation by supporting either me or my team.
I knew nothing about Toronto Rehab until the fall of 2013, when the taxicab I was in crashed into a stone retaining wall on Avenue Road. I was wearing my seatbelt, but the crash left me immediately paralyzed from the shoulders down. I knew immediately my life had changed. I was very fortunate to be near fantastic hospitals and very fortunate that my spinal cord was not completely severed. I arrived at the Lyndhurst Centre on a stretcher after two weeks in hospital, still 100% dependent on others for everything. At Lyndhurst, thanks to their expert and thoughtful care, I gradually regained physical independence, and after 6 weeks, I walked out of the building. Their outpatient care, along with private care, have been essential since then to continue to recover and to help with permanent deficits.
As a board member of the former Toronto Rehab Foundation, and now UHN Foundation, I have learned so much about Toronto Rehab. It is one of the world’s leading rehabilitation science centers with 5 sites and 511 patient beds, providing medical care to thousands of patients each year. A few of its key programs include cardiac rehab, stroke rehab, cancer rehab, brain & spinal cord injury rehab, geriatric care, MS rehab and more recently COVID-19 rehab, with mental health support embedded in each area of care.
It is also home to the KITE Research Institute where scientists are researching and developing new treatments, devices and products to improve the lives of people living with illness or disability. Their cutting-edge work and multi-disciplinary teams incorporate technology and artificial intelligence to provide solutions for both common and traumatic medical problems.
While my personal interest in supporting TRI arose from gratitude for excellent care in regaining physical independence at Lyndhurst, I am continually impressed by the breadth and depth of the expertise at Toronto Rehab and how the work they do can benefit everyone.
Thank you for considering a donation.
