By running the 2024 Toronto Scotiabank Half-Marathon I’m raising money in support of the work of UHN Foundation and their hospitals: Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, and Toronto Rehab. More specifically, I am raising money for liver cancer research.

“Liver cancer is a lethal kind of tumor. Fortunately the team at UHN is one of the world’s best liver cancer team tackling this cancer with all potential treatments, from transplant to the most cutting edge systemic treatments. Unfortunately the incidence of this cancer in Canada and other parts of the world continues to rise. The Liver Cancer Research Group at UHN is leading studies to change the fate of patients with liver cancer.”

In 2014 I was diagnosed with liver cancer. After two operations to remove tumors the specialists decided the option for me was a liver transplant which I received in June, 2019.

As some of you may know, I was a marathon runner prior to my liver transplant which was successful. I began living a normal postransplant life.

Stress and long commute led to overeating and under exercising which resulted in obesity, fatty liver and high blood sugar. In early January of 2024 year I finally gave my head a shake and began exercising regularly.

My family doctor and physio therapist has vetted me training to run a half-marathon in October (the Toronto Waterfront half marathon Oct 20, 2024) and I am moving along well in my training with a respectful speed. I have lost 29 pounds since January 8, 2024.

I am running and raising money for the UHN Foundation. It is a small gesture to say thanks to the people who saved my life. It is also a way that I can celebrate my good fortune in being able to be as fit as I am at my age and after a transplant. It is also a shout out to UHN showing the success of your work, and what the gift of a liver can do.
