Help support PIE: A global resource for medical and patient education
The PIE websites with free interactive online modules for medical and patient education attract about 1.3 million visitors per year from over 200 countries around the world.
The problem
These websites were created using an HTML template that we developed about 10 years ago, which has become a problem for the following reasons:
- These websites are not mobile-friendly and simply appear as very tiny versions of what appears on desktop computers.
- These sites are quite complex to create and update.
Our solution
Our latest websites for Heart Failure and TVASurg have been created using WordPress, which makes them responsive to changes in screen size, and work as well on smartphones as on tablets and desktop computers. It is also easier to create new WordPress websites and to update these sites after they have been created.
but…
There is no base funding for PIE from University Health Network. All of the funding for developing these websites, (over $1,000,000) came from peer reviewed grants, funding from philanthropy and from industry. Unfortunately, peer reviewed grants and funding from industry will not fund maintenance or updating of existing websites.
We need your help
We estimate the cost to convert our websites to WordPress sites to be $50,000, and we are asking for your help to reach our goal. Since our philosophy is to provide these websites for free, providing state-of-the-art medical and patient education to both developed and developing countries around the world, there is no income to fund these improvements. With your help we can improve the users experience on the PIE websites and make them accessible for the future.
