The Kidney Health Education and Research Group

Our Mission
Enhancing kidney health, advancing collaborative care, and empowering communities through ethnoculturally competent and patient-centered outcomes research
International impact of our work
- We supervised and mentored medical students in research and about 20 graduate (MD-PhD) students who are now researchers and leaders in nephrology research in Europe, Canada, and the US
- We established wide research collaborations in EU and North America
- We work with nephrologists, the Hungarian Society of Nephrology and clinical researchers in Hungary to promote patient-centered kidney care in Hungary
- We work with clinicians and researchers in Canada and the US to develop a computer based system to help patients and clinicians to monitor and manage symptoms and distress associated with kidney disease and solid organ transplant
- We adapted an education program, Explore Transplant for use in Ontario
- We work with researchers in the US to compare the impact of patient-centered transplant education
Recent and ongoing projects
- Developed research plans to study the impact of psychosocial distress on the quality of life of patients with chronic kidney disease and to test the effect of a collaborative care intervention (coordinated mental health care) to manage distress in patients on dialysis
- Initiated and managed the adaptation of the Explore Transplant program (US) to Ontario (ETO)
- Developed a pilot research project to test the impact of using ETO in 2 dialysis sites in Toronto
- Currently, we are working on a province-wide implementation study to assess the impact of ETO and systematic peer support on transplant outcomes
- Developing an electronic PROM toolkit monitor and manage symptoms and distress for patients on dialysis and for patients with organ transplant (heart, kidney, liver, lung, kidney-pancreas)
- Developing innovative clinical pathways to improve access to LDKT by developing culturally safe and competent clinical pathways for patients with advanced kidney disease
