This year our family is extremely grateful to the team at UHN’s Donald K Johnson Eye Institute, and particularly Dr. Matthew Schlenker, a Glaucoma, Cataract and Anterior Segment Surgeon, and Dr. Allan Slomovic, a Cornea and Exterior Eye Disease Surgeon who have been so instrumental in my wife Nancy’s care.
Nancy’s journey, and our family’s, over the past few years has not been easy, as she has faced the prospect of vision loss in both eyes. One cannot fully appreciate how much we value and rely on our sight until it is compromised. Through this experience, we have encountered the foremost compassion and expertise from this team. We are truly fortunate to have this world class Centre of Excellence available to us through the UHN. After multiple surgeries, Nancy has seen partial vision recovery, and while we are cautiously optimistic for further recovery we have also learned this is not a straight road and we continue to face many bumps along the way.
Dr. Schlenker, Dr. Slomovic and their colleagues in the Glaucoma and Cornea Clinics are using minimally invasive techniques to address challenging conditions, including those that were once considered untreatable, in a potentially safer way.
With your support, our goal is to help Dr. Schlenker, Dr. Slomovic and the incredible team at the Eye Institute to bring the most advanced treatments to patients like Nancy who find themselves seeking care at UHN. These new techniques have the potential to minimize tissue damage and improve outcome predictability – all equating to faster healing time and visual recovery for patients.
